Hearing and audiology care
Audiology clinics test hearing, diagnose hearing loss and supply and fit hearing aids. Some also offer ear wax removal and tinnitus support. Audiologists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Hearing services are available both on the NHS and privately.
NHS and private hearing care
The NHS provides hearing tests and hearing aids (usually on free loan) following a GP referral or, in some areas, direct referral. Private clinics — including high-street chains and independents — offer a wider choice of hearing aid styles and technology, often with shorter waits, for a fee. Many provide free initial hearing checks.
What to expect
- Hearing assessment — a test to measure the type and degree of any hearing loss.
- Hearing aids — fitting and tuning, with follow-up adjustments and aftercare.
- Ear wax removal — micro-suction or irrigation where appropriate.
Looking after your hearing
If you notice gradual hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or sudden changes in hearing, have it checked — sudden hearing loss should be assessed urgently. This page is information only and not medical advice; consult a registered audiologist or your GP.
