HealthWise lists 537 hearing and audiology clinics across more than 70 UK cities, covering hearing assessments, hearing-aid fitting and aftercare, ear wax removal and tinnitus support. Audiologists and hearing-aid dispensers must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and hearing care is available both on the NHS and privately.
The NHS provides hearing tests and hearing aids, usually on free long-term loan, following a GP referral (some areas allow direct referral). Private clinics — high-street chains and independents — offer a wider choice of hearing-aid styles and technology, often with shorter waits and free initial hearing checks, for a fee. NHS and private care are not mutually exclusive: many people have an NHS assessment and choose privately for a specific device.
The NHS no longer routinely offers ear wax removal in many areas, so it is now most often done privately at audiology clinics, some pharmacies and specialist ear-care services. The safest method for most people is microsuction (a clinician removes wax under a microscope with gentle suction); irrigation is an alternative where suitable. Do not insert cotton buds or attempt to dig wax out — that can push it deeper or damage the ear canal. Use the category and city filters below to find ear wax removal and audiology clinics in your area.
This page is information to help you choose a clinic, not medical advice — always consult a registered audiologist or your GP about your hearing. In a medical emergency call 999.
